No mess finger painting for toddlers

nomess

Since we have a rainy day here today I was racking my brain trying to think up some activities I could do with my one year old since we are stuck in the house. I thought finger painting would be fun, but I know my child would end up eating most of it. How about a mess free version of finger painting? Yes please!

So here is what I did:

  1. Tape some paper onto your table.
  2. Get 2 large ziploc  bags (I used the ones with the slider tab)
  3. Put either paint or flour/water mixture in each of the bags, try to get as much air out as possible then zip them closed.
  4. Tape the bags down onto the paper.

I tried 2 different “paint” mixtures for inside the bags. In the first bag I squirted in some of the finger paints I already had. This method could get a little costly, depending on how much you put in the bag each time.

So for the second bag I mixed up some flour and water in a large bowl, poured it into the bag and squirted in a couple colors of food coloring. This method is much more cost effective!

I thought my daughter would really enjoy this and she seemed to be amused for the first maybe 10 seconds but that was it. With her short attention span, she was already trying to find something else to do, so I will try this again another time. I think I had more fun with it than she did!

I tried to make a little bit of use out of some of the finger paint and ripped open the bag before I threw it all away. I stamped her little hand in it and tried to get a good imprint of her hand on a little canvas I had. It didn’t work out so well, but at least I have a canvas of her very first “finger painting!”
