Make Your Own Organic Baby Food – On a Budget

It’s really important to me that my baby only eats Organic foods for the time being, and those little pouches of food from the grocery store can sure get expensive. BUT you can feed your baby organic – on a budget too! It’s so easy to make your own organic baby food. I expected it to be much more time consuming, and I’m already so busy running a business, looking after a baby and a whole slew of animals too. However I was pleasantly surprised how little time it took to make the baby food and how cost effective it was.

First of all, I bought some organic produce that I wanted to try with my baby. I washed it and for all the food I’ve made so far, I’ve cubed the produce and steamed them. I usually get my organic produce from Trader Joes (they have great prices on organic avocado’s, bananas, zucchini, apples, kiwis, sweet potatos.), Jewel (Albertson’s), which has organic zucchini, apples, green beans, carrots. Also Costco sometimes has organic carrots and apples too and also organic strawberries. For anything else that I need to be organic, I go to Whole Foods.

Then I put the steamed food into my Vitamix blender with a little water (whereas possible I use the water that’s left over in the pot).

My daughter likes her purees very thick so I make the purees thick and then when I give them to her I always add a little hot water so they are warm.

You can add as much water as you need to until you get your desired consistency while blending.

Next I pour the puree into an ice cube tray, cover and freeze until solid.

I usually let them sit in the freezer until the next day then I take them out, pop all the cubes out and put them in a freezer ziplock bag. Always remember to label the bag with what the cubes are and the date. Try to use them up within 3 months.

Considering those individual pouches of organic baby food range between $1.39- $1.99 in the store for anywhere between 2.5 – 3.5 oz, this is how much it cost me to make the organic food for my baby:

Sweet Potatoes: $3.69 (Trader Joes) made 45 oz

Green Beans: $3.99 (Jewel Osco) made 15 oz

Applesauce: $3.00 (Trader Joes) made 10 oz

Carrots: $1.89 (Trader Joes) made 18 oz

Zucchini: $2.89 (Jewel Osco) made 15 oz

Cauliflower: $3.99 (Jewel Osco) made 24 oz
