Summer Bags – What’s Hot This Summer

If you’re looking to step out in style this summer, make sure you have a chic bag on your arm. This year’s hottest bag trends incorporate unique shapes and textures as well as punchy prints and striking colours that will make your bag look more like a focal point than an accessory. Here are the top bag trends for summer 2013:

1)    Geometric Prints

In case you haven’t already heard, it’s hip to be square this season. The geometric print trend incorporates the repetition of shapes as well as strong angles and curves to create a truly mesmorising effect. Whether you go for classic houndstooth or a bold tribal print, your bag will surely make a big statement this summer.

2)    Reptile Skin

Forget cheetahs, leopards, and zebras. This year, reptile skins dominate the high fashion animal kingdom. Choosing a handbag or a clutch made from crocodile or snakeskin is the perfect way to incorporate this summer trend into your personal style. The trend looks even sleeker on a bag with a high shine finish.

3)    Transparent bags

This summer bag trend may seem odd, as your first urge is probably to hide the clutter inside your purse. That said, transparent handbags were all over the runway this season. Trending this summer are transparent bags with metallic accents or those in funky see-through colours.

4)    Itty bitty messenger bags

Headed to a crowded concert or club in the evening? Don’t get weighed down by a huge bag! Instead, carry an itty bitty messenger bag with you where you can stow just the essentials—credit cards, ID, and your cell phone.

5)    Rucksacks

On the opposite end of the size spectrum this season are rucksacks, which are spacious enough to accommodate anything from your beach gear to your coursework. This summer, they’re being designed in a more minimalist and athletic fashion, perfect for creating a look that’s more luxury casual.

6)    Document clutches

Need a bigger bag that’s a little more sophisticated than a rucksack? Say hello to the new document clutch. This oversize clutch is ideal for working women who need a chic bag where they can carry their important documents, as well as their cell phone and wallet. Make sure that you choose one that comes with a detachable strap so you can convert it into a shoulder bag as well.

7)    Creative shapes and handles.

Chanel made a big impression on the runways with this season with its innovative “hula hoop” handbag, but it isn’t the only designer that’s putting some extra creativity into the shapes and handles of its handbags. Everything from twisted telephone cord handles to metal chains and straps were seen on the runways this season.

8)    Metallics

Want to look truly glam for your dinner date or a night out with the girls? Carry a metallic clutch with you. High shine and sequinned/embellished bags make a big statement, while brocade finishes incorporate the trend in a more subtle way.

9)    Bright colours

The colour block trend is hot for summer 2013, and is a fun way to experiment with more vibrant hues you might be too scared to wear otherwise. A brightly coloured summer bag that includes a floral print or contrasting hues—coral against mint, red against fuchsia, black against lime green—is sure to make a big impression.
